A long and proud history:
William V, Duke of Bavaria, founded the Hofbräuhaus over four houndred years ago. Since that time both the brewery and its famous tavern have written beer history and helped shape beer culture.
The origins of modern Bavarian Weissbier are closely connected to the history of the Hofbräuhaus, and Munich´s first Bock was also a
Hofbräuhaus creation. In other words, Hofbräu beer has always been a byword for Munich brews.
1589 - Establishment of the Hofbrähaus
On september 27, 1589, William V ordered the construction of a court brewery and secured the services of Heimeran Pongratz as master builder and brewmaster.
1602 - Hofbräu brews Weissbier
William´s son and succesor, Maximilian I, forbids all other breweries to brew Weissbier, securing the court brewery the respective monopoly for 200 years and providing Hofbräu München with 400 years of experience in brewing the top-fermented beer.
1607 - The brewery moves to the Platzl
Maximiliam I proves so successful with his Weissbier strategy that the brewery is unable to keep pace with de-mand. Maximilian decides to build a new brewery at the Platzl square, where the Hofbräuhaus stands to this day.
1614- The first Maibock
After some experimentation, brewmaster Elias Pichler comes up with the first Munich beer to be brewed in the popular "Ainpoeckish" style.
Over time, it comes to be known as Bock for short, leading on to Hofbräu Maibock, Munich´s oldest beer of this type.
1810- The Oktoberfest is born
On October 17, 1810 forty thousand joyous spectators flock to a field outside Munich, where a horse race is being held to celebrate the wedding of Ludwig of Bavaria and Therese von Sachsen - Hildburghausen. The meadow is later named "Theresienwiese" in honor of the bride, and the festival is repeated every year, complete with a special beer to mark the occasion Hofbräu´s world-famous Oktoberfestbier.
1828- The Hofbrähaus opens up to the public
Ludwig I issues a decree allowing the public (and not just courtiers and royal servants) to partake of beer and more solid sustenance at the Hofbräuhaus. This marks the start of the Hofbräuhaus tavern as we know it today.
1879- HB becomes a brand
Brewery director Johann Nepomuk Staubwasser has the crowned HB signet registered at Munich Regional Court and later on at the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin "for the sole use of the Royal Hofbräuhaus in Munich"
1896- The brewery moves to Wiener Platz
By now conditions are becoming too crowded for both a brewery and tavern at the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, so Prince Regent Luitpold moves the brewery to the Innere Wiener Street.
1897- The Hofbräuhaus is rebuilt
After a year of structural alterations, the Hofbrähaus re-opens as a tavern, presenting itself in the form as we know it today.
1988- The brewery moves again
On November 23, 1988 the free State of Bavaria celebrates the inauguration of the Hofbräu brewery in Riem, a sub-urb of Munich.
1999- A Hofbräuhaus opens in Dubai
The first Hofbräuhaus outside Munich is opened at the JW Marriott Hotel in Dubai.
2003- A Hofbräuhaus goes truly International
Success knows no limits, and by now the Hofbräuhaus concept is being exported all over the world. Newport and Las Vegas in the USA and Jinangyin, near Shanghai in China, each gaing a Hofbräuhaus.
2005- The best of the best
The superbrands Award is conferred on the Hofbäuhaus, acknowledging it as one of Germany´s strongest brands.
